Taiwanese American conductor Mei-Ann Chen, acclaimed for “infusing orchestras with energy, enthusiasm, and high-level music-making,” leads a magnificently ebullient program. Nkeiru Okoye, one of “America’s leading African American women composers,” rouses with Voices Shouting Out, a percussive, passionate and beautiful homage in response to the tragedies of September 11, 2001. Rachmaninoff’s romantically lyrical and virtuosic piano concerto, Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, will enthrall, performed by the multi-talented Conrad Tao. Then, Tchaikovsky’s Ukrainian folksong-filled and powerfully joyful Symphony No. 2 concludes in a showcase of lyricism and energy.
